How do I see ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in Google Analytics 4?

// short answer
Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition in GA4 and find the AI Assistant channel, added on 13 May 2026 for visits from assistants Google recognises, such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Then filter the source for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, because tagged ChatGPT links and Perplexity visits can land in other channels. Treat the total as a lower bound.
- Google added an AI Assistant channel to GA4 on 13 May 2026; its help pages name ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as examples, but not Perplexity.
- ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its answers; on get-geo.ai in the week of 30 September–7 October 2026, almost one in five visitors arrived with that tag.
- In the same week, GA4 counted a little over a third of the visitors recorded by Vercel Web Analytics, which runs on our site without a consent banner.
- A standard GA4 property allows two custom channel groups of up to 50 channels each, and Google applies them to past reports as well.
Where is ChatGPT traffic in GA4 now?
Since 13 May 2026, GA4 puts visits from recognised AI assistants into a separate AI Assistant channel. Open Reports, then Acquisition → Traffic acquisition: the table is grouped by the session's default channel group, and AI Assistant appears as its own row once such visits arrive.
Google's rule works on the referrer, the address of the page a visitor came from. When the referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and the campaign to (ai-assistant). Google's help pages name ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as examples and do not publish the full list.
Google's announcement does not say whether visits before 13 May 2026 were moved into the new channel, so check a date range after that day.
- 1. Is the AI Assistant channel in your Traffic acquisition report? Set the dates after 13 May 2026. Pass: the row is there. Fail: no row, although you know people arrive from ChatGPT; go to checks 3–5.
- 2. Can you see which assistants sent the visits? Change the table's dimension to Session source / medium. Pass: each assistant appears as its own domain with the ai-assistant medium.
Which AI visits does the AI Assistant channel miss?
The AI Assistant channel misses visits that reach your site without a recognised referrer, so tagged ChatGPT links, visits from apps and Perplexity can sit in other channels. GA4 assigns the channel from the referrer alone.
Three default rules decide where those visits go instead. A visit with no referrer and no tags counts as Direct. A link from a site that Google does not treat as an assistant stays in Referral. Google warns that missing UTM parameters produce (not set) values, and a session whose source / medium is reported as (not set) is shown as Unassigned.
Perplexity is the clearest gap. Google's examples for the channel do not include it, while Microsoft Clarity lists Perplexity among the AI sources it recognises. Check where perplexity.ai sits in your own report instead of assuming either way.
- 3. Where does chatgpt.com appear? In Traffic acquisition, switch to Session source / medium and search for “chatgpt”. Pass: every row carries the ai-assistant medium. Fail: rows with another medium; build the custom AI channel described below.
- 4. Where does perplexity.ai appear? Search for “perplexity” the same way. Pass: you find it and know its channel. Fail: nothing appears; compare with the referrer report of another counter before concluding there were no visits.
- 5. What is in Unassigned? Open the Unassigned row and switch to Session source / medium. Pass: no assistant domains. Fail: an assistant domain appears there; match your AI channel on source only.
Why does ChatGPT traffic show up under UTM tags rather than referrers?
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links in its answers, so the visit stays identifiable even when no referrer arrives. OpenAI states this in its Publishers and Developers FAQ and documents only that one parameter. A UTM tag is a label inside the link itself; a referrer is information the browser sends separately and may withhold.
On our site, in the week of 30 September–7 October 2026, almost one in five visitors counted by Vercel Web Analytics arrived with utm_source=chatgpt.com. Vercel showed them in its UTM Parameters panel, which is part of the Web Analytics Plus and Enterprise plans.
Vercel's documentation explains why the referrer report can tell a different story: a referrer is recorded only as the Referrer-Policy header allows and only when the link has no rel="noreferrer" attribute. The UTM panel simply shows the tags the address carried. A report built only on referrers can therefore undercount ChatGPT in any analytics tool.
- 6. Does your report show the tag as well as the referrer? In GA4, utm_source fills the Session source dimension; in other counters, open the UTM or campaign view. Pass: chatgpt.com appears there. Fail: only referrers were checked; add the tag view to your monthly report.
How do I group every AI source into one GA4 channel?
Build a custom channel group with one AI channel that matches on source alone and, as Google's help advises, sits above Referral. In Admin, under Data display, open Channel groups and choose Create new channel group; GA4 starts it as a copy of the default group.
Matching on source matters because OpenAI documents only a source in the ChatGPT tag, so a rule that also requires a medium can miss those visits. A standard GA4 property allows two custom channel groups with up to 50 channels each, and Google applies them to past reports, so the new channel also covers earlier months.
GA4 reads a regular expression as a full, case-sensitive match, so the pattern needs .* at both ends to allow anything around the name. One condition is enough: set Source to matches regex and paste this single line: .*(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini|copilot|deepseek|grok).*
Do not copy Google's own example unchanged. Its pattern begins with ^.*ai| and, under full matching, that part may also match any source ending in “ai”, such as any website on a .ai domain, so ordinary referrals could be counted as assistants.
- 7. Does the new channel collect every assistant? Switch the Traffic acquisition table to your custom group. Pass: chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai sit in one AI row. Fail: some remain in Referral or Unassigned; check that the channel sits above Referral and has no medium condition.
Why does GA4 show fewer AI visitors than other counters?
GA4 counts only visitors whose browser loads its script, so on get-geo.ai in the week of 30 September–7 October 2026 it reported a little over a third of the visitors recorded by Vercel Web Analytics. Vercel identifies visitors by a hash of the request and uses no third-party cookies, and on our site it runs without a consent banner.
Three causes stack up, and we have not measured their shares. Our consent banner appears for visitors from the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and GA4 and Microsoft Clarity load for them only after they agree. Ad and tracking blockers stop some scripts. The tools also define a visitor differently: Vercel keeps a visitor session for no more than 24 hours, while GA4 reports users.
Microsoft Clarity runs only on our English pages and counts sessions, so we do not compare its total with GA4. Clarity has its own AI channel, AIPlatform, assigned from known referral patterns. Read AI visits in GA4 as a lower bound and compare weeks within one tool, not totals across tools.
- 8. Do you know what share of visitors GA4 sees? Compare GA4 users with a counter that needs no consent, for the same week, and note where your banner appears. Pass: you know the ratio and report AI visits as a lower bound. Fail: GA4 totals are presented as complete.
| Counter | What it counts | Consent needed on our site | How it recognises AI visits | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vercel Web Analytics | Visitors, by a hash of the request | No | No AI channel; the UTM Parameters panel shows utm_source=chatgpt.com | Total volume and the ChatGPT tag |
| Google Analytics 4 | Users | Yes, for the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland | AI Assistant channel, by referrer | Trends and key events, read as a lower bound |
| Microsoft Clarity | Sessions, English pages only | Yes, for the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland | AIPlatform channel, by referral patterns | Seeing what AI visitors do on a page |
Where do Google AI Mode and AI Overviews clicks show up?
GA4 counts clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search, so they never reach the AI Assistant channel. Google's definition of the Organic Search channel names both surfaces explicitly.
Search Console shows the other half. Its Generative AI performance report lists impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, without clicks or queries, and does not separate the two surfaces. Impressions are not visits. Our guide to Google AI Overviews explains how pages get there.
The Gemini app is a different case: Gemini is one of Google's named examples for the AI Assistant channel.
- 9. Are your target pages shown in AI Overviews or AI Mode? Open Search Console, then Generative AI performance, and filter by page. Pass: impressions on the pages you expect. Fail: none; that points to visibility, which no analytics setting changes.
What should an AI traffic report from your agency include?
An AI traffic report should name the sources it counted, include tagged ChatGPT visits, state how much of the audience analytics can see, and sit next to measurements of the answers themselves. Four items make the number checkable: the sources and channels counted, whether utm_source=chatgpt.com visits outside the AI Assistant channel are included, the consent and blocker limits, and citation measurements for the same period.
Referral traffic is the lagging signal. Citation rate, the share of repeated test answers that cite your site, and share of voice, your share of brand mentions against competitors in the same answers, describe the answers directly; our guide to measuring AI visibility and our measurement method explain both. Our checklist for judging whether GEO is working puts traffic alongside the other signals.
If you want to see the answers behind the traffic, our free AI visibility audit covers ten prompts in one language where you are invisible, the current answers, crawler-access checks and specific fixes, in writing.
- 10. Can you check the report you receive? Pass: it names sources and channels, includes tagged ChatGPT visits, states consent limits and shows citation measurements. Fail: one “AI traffic” chart with no sources; ask for the four items.
The ten checks on one screen
Ten checks cover where AI visits sit in GA4, what the AI Assistant channel misses and how to read the totals. Run them once after setting up the channel, then with each monthly report.
| # | Check | Pass | Fail → action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | AI Assistant channel in Traffic acquisition, dates after 13 May 2026 | Row present | Missing → checks 3–5 |
| 2 | Session source / medium as the table dimension | Assistants named by domain | Only the channel name → change the dimension |
| 3 | Search the source for “chatgpt” | All rows with the ai-assistant medium | Other mediums → custom AI channel |
| 4 | Search the source for “perplexity” | Found, channel known | Not found → compare with another counter |
| 5 | Open Unassigned | No assistant domains | Assistant domain present → match on source only |
| 6 | Tag view next to the referrer view | chatgpt.com visible by tag | Referrers only → add the tag view |
| 7 | Custom AI channel above Referral | All assistants in one row | Still split → remove the medium condition |
| 8 | GA4 users against a counter without consent, same week | Ratio and banner regions known | Unknown → report AI visits as a lower bound |
| 9 | Search Console Generative AI performance | Impressions on target pages | None → a visibility question |
| 10 | Agency report contains the four items | All four present | One chart without sources → ask for them |

Does GA4 track Perplexity automatically now?
Google does not say so. The help pages for the AI Assistant channel name ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, and Google has not published the full list. Search your Traffic acquisition report for “perplexity” and note the channel it sits in. If it is Referral, a custom channel that matches on source brings it in.
Why does my agency's AI traffic number differ from my GA4?
Usually the two numbers count different things. One may use only GA4's AI Assistant channel, which started on 13 May 2026; another may use a custom group that also catches tagged ChatGPT links and Perplexity; a third may come from a counter that needs no consent banner. Ask which sources, channels, dates and tool each figure uses.
Why is ChatGPT traffic showing as direct in GA4?
GA4 counts a visit as Direct when it arrives with no referrer and no tags. That happens, for example, when someone reads an answer and later types your domain into the browser. Links that keep ChatGPT's utm_source=chatgpt.com tag stay identifiable even without a referrer, so check the tag before assuming a visit came from nowhere.
What does utm_source=chatgpt.com mean?
It is a tag that ChatGPT adds to links in its answers, according to OpenAI's Publishers and Developers FAQ. It tells your analytics that the click came from ChatGPT. It is not one of your campaigns and not an ad. Keep it intact through redirects and URL rewrites, or the visit can lose its most reliable label.
Can I see which pages ChatGPT sends visitors to?
Yes. In GA4, open Reports → Engagement → Landing page. Google defines that dimension as the page path and query string of a session's first pageview, so searching it for “chatgpt.com” finds tagged arrivals whatever channel they landed in. Do the same for other assistants. Visits without a tag and visitors who decline cookies will still be missing.
